Why It’s Important To Have Proper Dance Attire

Learning how to dance is 1 part practice and 1 part preparation. It is absolutely essential to be prepared for your dance class because without the right equipment and attire, you will not be able to effectively perform the exercises that is being asked of you. In addition to that, without the proper preparation, you will hold back your own progress as well as the progress of the class.

Here is exactly what you need to do to be prepared for any style of dance that you choose to study:

Ballet:

When dressing for ballet class, you can wear a tight fitting (but comfortable) leotard, wrap-around ballet skirt, tights, and ballet slippers. Footwear is especially important for those studying ballet because ballet requires special footwear to support the dance style. Ballet dancers typically wear black and pink, but you can always ask your teacher if you can wear other colours.

Jazz

Like ballet, jazz  requires you to wear a leotard with tights or form fitting jazz pants. Your outfit should be form fitting (as to not get in your way as you dance) and should be completed with soft leather dance shoes to protect your feet. Although jazz pants are often black, is typically allows for more freedom in terms of the colour of your leotard.

Hip Hop

Hip hop does not have strict clothing guidelines like ballet and jazz does. The only guideline that one should follow when dressing for hip hop class is to remember to wear baggier, loose fitting clothing to fit the style of the dance.

Modern & Lyrical Dance

Modern and lyrical dance, like jazz, requires you to wear form fitting tights or leggings with a leotard or form fitting tights. Ensure that there is no excess fabric flying around you that can distract or entangle you as you dance. Many dancers of this style also choose to wear a foot thong so that their feet do not become negatively affected by the constant practice.
